Fire Safety Training

Two practical courses for your staff: fire warden (fire marshal) training, and how to use fire extinguishers safely. Delivered at your premises, across East Yorkshire, Hull and York.

Why fire safety training matters

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, employers must give staff adequate fire safety training when they start, when their work or the risks change, and repeat it periodically where appropriate. The training should take place during working hours.

You must also nominate enough competent people to put your fire procedures into practice, such as evacuating the building and, where your fire risk assessment calls for it, using firefighting equipment. Fire wardens usually take on these roles.

Which course do you need?

  • Fire warden (fire marshal) for staff who will help with evacuations and day-to-day fire safety.
  • Use of fire extinguishers for staff who may need to tackle a small fire safely.

Not sure? Your fire risk assessment should say who needs training. We can help you work it out.

Our two courses

Fire warden (fire marshal)

For staff appointed to help manage fire safety and evacuations. Fire warden and fire marshal are two names for the same role.

  • Fire safety law and the fire warden’s role
  • How fires start and spread, and common causes at work
  • Spotting fire hazards and carrying out routine fire safety checks
  • Raising the alarm and calling the fire service
  • Evacuation procedures, checking your area and the assembly point
  • Helping people who need assistance to evacuate, including personal emergency evacuation plans (PEEPs)
  • Types of fire extinguisher and when it is safe to use one
  • Fire drills and keeping records

Use of fire extinguishers

For staff who may need to use a fire extinguisher. It covers when it is safe to tackle a small fire, and when to get out and leave it to the fire service.

  • How fires start and spread: the fire triangle
  • Classes of fire (A, B, C, D and F) and electrical fires
  • Extinguisher types and colour codes: water (red), foam (cream), dry powder (blue), CO₂ (black) and wet chemical (yellow)
  • Choosing the right extinguisher, and which ones must never be used on certain fires
  • How to use an extinguisher and a fire blanket safely
  • When not to tackle a fire, and keeping your escape route clear

At your premises

We come to you, so staff learn using your own building, alarm and escape routes. Most courses take 2–3 hours.

Hands-on practice

Both courses include practical exercises. Taking part is optional for anyone who would rather not.

Certificates

Everyone who completes a course receives a certificate.

Fire safety training FAQs

Yes. Article 21 of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires employers to give staff adequate fire safety training when they start work and when the risks they face change. It should be repeated periodically where appropriate, suit the risks identified in your fire risk assessment, and take place during working hours.
The law does not set a number. It depends on the size and layout of your premises, how many people use them, shift patterns and absences, and what your fire risk assessment says. You need enough fire wardens to cover every area whenever the building is in use.
Yes. In UK workplaces, fire warden and fire marshal are two names for the same role.
The law says training should be repeated periodically where appropriate and updated when risks change. Many organisations refresh it every year, and whenever staff, the building or fire procedures change.
Staff who your fire risk assessment and procedures expect to use firefighting equipment. Everyone should know that their first priority is to raise the alarm and get out safely.
