What a fire extinguisher service visit includes

On an annual service visit, a competent technician checks each extinguisher on site in line with BS 5306-3:

Checks each extinguisher is the right type for the risk and in a suitable position, and advises on any gaps (BS 5306-8)
Inspects the body, hose, seals, pressure gauge and operating instructions, and weighs extinguishers where needed
Carries out an extended service or recharge when one is due, or after an extinguisher has been used
Inspects fire blankets
Removes condemned equipment and recommends replacements
Fits a new service label and updates your equipment register
Leaves you a certificate for your fire safety file

What we need for a quote

Site postcode, so we know where the extinguishers are
Number of extinguishers, and any fire blankets
Types, if you know them: water, foam, CO₂, powder or wet chemical. The colour band on the label tells you the type. If you are not sure, just give us the number.

How often do fire extinguishers need testing and servicing?

Portable fire extinguishers should be tested and serviced by a competent person every year, with a quick visual check on site each month.

Do fire extinguishers need servicing by law?

Fire safety law requires any fire-fighting equipment provided in your premises to be kept in efficient working order and good repair. British Standard BS 5306-3 recommends a basic service by a competent person at least once a year, and you will get a certificate for your fire safety records.

Where do I take fire extinguishers to be checked?

You do not need to take them anywhere. We come to your premises, service each extinguisher on site, fit a new service label and update your equipment register. If one needs a recharge or replacing, we will explain the options first.

What should I check each month?

BS 5306-3 recommends a quick monthly visual check by someone on site: each extinguisher is in its place and easy to reach, the instructions face outwards, the safety pin and tamper seal are intact, there is no obvious damage, and the pressure gauge (if fitted) is in the green. Note each check in your fire safety log book.
